Underground water and drain line rough-in

Your Home's Lifeline

The water service line is the main pipe bringing fresh water from the city meter (or your private well) into your home. Over decades, these lines—especially older galvanized or lead pipes—can corrode, leak, or restrict water flow. A failing water main is a major issue that can undermine your property and cause sudden water outages.

Helena's housing stock makes service line problems especially common. Neighborhoods like the historic west side, the Sixth Ward, and older parts of East Helena still have galvanized steel service lines installed sixty to a hundred years ago — pipes that have been silently rusting shut from the inside the entire time. Homes built through the 1980s may have polybutylene, a material with a well-documented failure record. If your home predates 1990 and you don't know what your service line is made of, it is worth finding out before it decides for you, usually in the middle of winter when excavation is hardest.

Frost depth is the other Montana-specific factor. Around Helena, water service lines must be buried at least six feet deep to stay below the frost line, and a line that was installed shallow — or that lost cover when a driveway or landscaping was regraded — can freeze solid during an extended cold snap. We repair frozen and frost-damaged services every winter, and when we replace a line we set it at proper depth with clean bedding so it never becomes a cold-weather liability again.

Signs of a Water Main Issue

  • Unexplained Puddles: Soggy spots or lush patches of grass in your yard when it hasn't rained.

  • Drop in Water Pressure: A sudden or gradual decrease in water pressure throughout the entire house.

  • Discolored Water: Rusty or brownish water when you first turn on the tap.

  • Spike in Water Bill: If your municipal water bill suddenly jumps, you likely have an underground leak.

Our Process

  1. Locate & Diagnose: We use line tracing and leak detection methods to pinpoint the issue.

  2. Explain: We clearly explain whether a spot repair is viable, or if the line is too degraded and requires full replacement.

  3. Quote: We provide a transparent estimate covering excavation, pipe work, and backfill.

  4. Fix: We safely excavate, replace the damaged section or run a new modern poly or copper line, and handle the connections.

  5. Walk-through: We verify restored pressure and ensure the excavation site is safely backfilled.

  6. Warranty: You get a long-lasting, reliable water supply.

What We Work On

We replace old galvanized, lead, and polybutylene service lines with modern, durable materials like high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or copper. We coordinate with local municipalities for shut-offs and inspections.

Before any digging starts, we call in utility locates through Montana 811 so buried gas, electric, and communication lines are marked, and we plan the excavation route to disturb as little of your yard, driveway, and landscaping as possible. Where conditions allow, we can often pull a new HDPE line through the path of the old one, keeping the trenching to a pit at each end instead of an open cut across the entire yard. When the job is done, we pressure-test the new line, flush it thoroughly, and make sure the excavation is backfilled and compacted properly so you aren't left with a sunken trench in your lawn next spring.

"Aaron is a really great plumber and a really great guy. Super friendly and reliable. He replumbed our house after a fire and did great. I called him this morning to see if he could fix our boiler since we didn't have hot water. He said "sure, just leave the door unlocked and I'll swing by". I had no hesitation. Came home, boiler was fixed. You'll be glad you called him."
